In order to move beyond excuses, a number of methods can be employed. These range from setting proper expectations, which include goals, timelines and parameters of success, to periodic performance reviews consisting of candid analysis and discussion of areas for improvement, in addition to confronting excuses whenever they arise.
Setting Proper Expectations
In order to maximize the probability that the results you are aiming for will be achieved, all parties involved need to understand the following:
1) what the desired end result is (goals),
2) when that result should be achieved (timeline),
3) how will it be measured (parameters of success), and
4) why this is important (to create ownership and buy-in).
